This bloghas been updated, and you’ll find the latest version over here: Leave Stacking: The Ultimate 2026 Annual Leave Hack for Maximum Time Off
As 2024 winds down, it’s time to focus on something truly important: not the New Year’s resolutions you’ll abandon by February, but your annual leave strategy for 2025. If you’re not already leave stacking, you’re doing it wrong.
Leave stacking is the ultimate workplace power move – using bank holidays to transform a measly few days off into an extended escape. With 2025 just around the corner, it’s time to flex your organisational skills and book those days now before Karen in HR beats you to it.
TL;DR: Want to skip to the good bit? Scroll to the bottom of this post for the key dates you should be looking at booking in for:
- Ireland
- Northern Ireland
- Scotland
- England
- Wales
What Even Is Leave Stacking?
Leave stacking is the clever trick of aligning your annual leave with bank holidays to maximise time off while minimising the number of leave days you actually use. Imagine getting a full nine-day break by using only four days of leave. Yes, really. It’s like finding an extra pack of biscuits in the cupboard when you thought you’d finished them.
It’s not just about gaming the system; it’s about making the most of the time you’ve earned. Life’s too short to waste on just weekend getaways when you could turn four long weekends into mini-retirements spread throughout the year.
Why Do People Leave Stack?
Let’s get real. Nobody wants to sit at their desk watching the same coffee mug spiral around the office dishwasher while counting down to their next break. Leave stacking is about freedom, efficiency, and a little sprinkle of smug satisfaction.
It gives you the chance to:
- Take Proper Breaks: None of that “back to work on Monday” nonsense. Stack smartly, and you’ll get full weeks off with minimal effort.
- Plan Ahead: By sorting this out now, you can book that dream holiday or even just a week of solid Netflix and naps.
- Save Leave Days: Got big plans at the end of the year? Leave stacking keeps a stash of days for when you really need them.
- Outsmart Your Colleagues: Because there’s nothing worse than realising half the team’s already claimed the best dates.
Why 2025 Is Prime Time for Leave Stacking
In 2025, the calendar is playing nice. With well-placed bank holidays and some creative thinking, you can turn those official days off into extended escapes. But here’s the kicker: if you don’t act now, you’ll be left with crumbs while everyone else is jetting off to sunnier climates.
How Does Leave Stacking Help People?
For starters, it helps you reclaim a bit of work-life balance. You’re not a robot, and taking time off is scientifically proven to boost mental health, productivity, and happiness. (Okay, I made that up, but it sounds right, doesn’t it?)
By stacking your leave, you can:
- Reduce Burnout: Spread your breaks evenly through the year, and you’ll feel refreshed rather than running on fumes.
- Do More: Fancy a weeklong road trip? Or maybe two mini getaways? Stacking lets you have both.
- Save Money: Travel during off-peak times when prices aren’t eye-wateringly high.
Oh, and let’s not forget how smug you’ll feel booking a four-day week when the rest of your office is dragging themselves in every morning.
How to Get Started
- Check the 2025 Bank Holidays: Grab a cuppa and scroll down to your preferred location to start plotting. I’ve got some suggestions whether you’re Irish, British, Scottish or a mix of all three!
- Strategise: Think about when you’ll need breaks most. Easter? Summer? A big blowout at Christmas?
- Act Fast: By January, the best days will be snapped up faster than Glastonbury tickets. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
- Be Tactical: Got teammates who leave everything until the last minute? Strike first and claim your days before they even realise what’s happening.
A Quick Example: Easter 2025
Good Friday is on 18 April, Easter Monday on 21 April. Book off 22–25 April, and suddenly you’ve got 9 consecutive days off for the price of 4. Think of the possibilities: a sun-soaked escape, a staycation, or just a chance to sleep for 72 hours straight.

This is genius. I am going to tack some additional leave on to my new year bank holidays 🚀
Enjoy! I have done the same and can’t wait for some summer sunshine.
Thanks for sharing! I used this hack last year and it totally paid off!
Love that you do this too! It’s mad how a bit of creativity with your leave can seriously pay off. Worked out recently that I spent 19% of last year away from home just by playing the system right! 🔥
