Where to Stay in Mexico City: SkyTown Insurgentes, San Rafael’s Best Stay

Looking for The Best Place to Stay in Mexico City? We’ve Got You!

Headed to Mexico City? You’ll want to base yourself somewhere that gives you the best of everything – unbeatable views, a buzzing neighbourhood, and all the creature comforts to make your stay effortless. Enter SkyTown Insurgentes, perched in one of the coolest neighbourhoods on the planet.

A Room With a View: Mexico City’s Hidden Gem

This isn’t just a great place to stay – it’s a front-row seat to one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. Step into your apartment, throw open the curtains, and boom. There it is. Monumento a la Revolución, standing tall, looking like something straight out of a movie. At golden hour, the whole thing glows. At night, it lights up in ever-changing colours. If you’re anything like me, you’ll spend a ridiculous amount of time just staring at it.

A Room With a View! It was incredible to wake up each morning to see these beautiful sunrises as a backdrop to the Monumento a la Revolución.

Just outside your door, there’s Avenida de los Insurgentes – Mexico City’s longest road – and one of the longest roads on the planet. It slices through the city for almost 29 kilometres, connecting some of the most important neighbourhoods. It’s home to everything from street food to high-end restaurants, ancient ruins to towering skyscrapers. Stay here and you’ll have the whole city at your feet. Literally. The Metrobús has a station right outside the building!

The CDMX Metrobús just has to be the longest bus in the world, doesn’t it!? This is directly outside SkyTown Insurgentes. You won’t have far to walk!

The Apartment

So, let’s talk about SkyTown itself. It’s got every type of amenity that makes it easy to feel at home – if your home had a gym, sauna, steam room, swimming pool, and rooftop lounge areas with some of the best city views going, that is.

Whether you are in the mood to smash out a workout, soak in the heat, or just kick back with a coffee while watching the skyline, SkyTown has you covered.

We stayed here, at Diego’s place – rated in the top 5% of homes. Our 16th floor apartment had front-row seats to Monumento a la Revolución – equally impressive in daytime as it is illuminated at night. The apartment had blackout blinds, a coffee machine, filtered water, and TV. It’s stylish, modern, and packed with everything you need.

The pastries in CDMX are hard to beat. We tried so many different types from the local bakeries. It was nice to have a kitchen at our disposal.

Stay at Diego’s place and you’ll have a fully equipped kitchen, fast WiFi, and just enough space to properly unwind after a day of exploring. Mexico City is intense – the noise, the energy, the sheer size of it – so having a peaceful space to retreat to was a game-changer.

Catching up with our favourite morning show, Programa Hoy, during breakfast in our cosy apartment. Hola, Chef Marianos!

Not only is the apartment clean, comfortable, and packed with amenities, but you’re in Mexico City… and what’s never too far away in CDMX? A 7-Eleven, of course! This one’s just downstairs, tucked behind the building – perfect for grabbing supplies any time of day.

Did you know there are over 700 7-Elevens in Mexico? And they are planning on opening another 100 per year for the next three years! Next stop: Ireland? Thanks!

Exploring San Rafael: The CDMX Neighbourhood You Need to Visit

Ah, San Rafael, the neighbourhood you’re calling home during your stay. It’s got history, art, and some serious character. Back in the day, it was the stomping ground of legendary architects and artists like Leonora Carrington and Remedios Varo. Today, it’s a mix of old and new – French-style mansions next to modernist facades, indie galleries showcasing cutting-edge art, and some of the best local eateries in the city.

San Rafa is home to classic cantinas, cosy cafés, and proper neighbourhood taquerías where you can grab a late-night bite. Cine Ópera, once a grand old theatre, now stands abandoned like something from a noir film. And if you fancy a night at the theatre, you’re in the right place – Teatro San Rafael and Fernando Soler are two of the city’s most iconic spots for live performances.

Neighbourhoods Within Walking Distance of San Rafael, CDMX

The best part? Skytown isn’t just in a great neighbourhood – it’s also ridiculously well connected to some of Mexico City’s biggest hotspots.

  • Centro Histórico – 20 mins on foot
Love a bit of history? Mexico City’s Centro Histórico is packed with it. Spanish-era churches, grand colonial buildings, and the iconic Zócalo – one of the largest city squares in the world. You can explore ancient Aztec ruins at Templo Mayor, marvel at the stunning interiors of Palacio Postal, or just wander the streets soaking in the atmosphere.
  • Roma Norte – 25 mins on foot
This is CDMX’s hipster heartland. Leafy streets, indie boutiques, art galleries, and a café culture that rivals any European city. It’s the kind of place where you can sip on a perfect americano, browse through a record store, and stumble upon a speakeasy hidden behind a taco shop. Roma Norte is also a foodie paradise – you’ll find everything from gourmet tacos to high-end tasting menus.
  • Condesa – 35 mins on foot
A little further but totally worth it, Condesa is all about laid-back vibes, Art Deco architecture, and tree-lined avenues that feel miles away from the chaos of the city centre. It’s where locals come to jog in Parque México, sip cocktails on stylish terraces, and brunch like it’s a competitive sport. If you’re after a slow morning, this is the place.

The Irish Travel Addict Verdict?

If you want a stay that’s equal parts comfort, culture, and convenience without the prices of nearby bougie neighbourhoods, Skytown Insurgentes is where it’s at. Wake up to epic views, step straight into the heart of San Rafael, and have Centro Histórico, Roma Norte, and Condesa all within walking distance. It’s got everything you need – and then some.
