How to Get from Zagreb to Ljubljana Without Breaking the Bank
If you’re heading from Croatia’s capital to Slovenia’s, the FlixBus route from Zagreb to Ljubljana is one of the easiest and most affordable ways to make the journey. It’s a short hop across the border, and the whole experience is far less effort than you might expect.
Booking your FlixBus from Zagreb to Ljubljana
You can book directly through the FlixBus website or their app. Buses run multiple times a day, from early morning to late evening, and you’ll usually pay between €10 and €20 depending on how early you book. It’s worth checking in advance to get the best price and avoid any last-minute stress.
All you need is your digital ticket and your passport or ID. Even though Croatia is in the EU, you’ll be crossing into Slovenia which is in the Schengen Zone, so border checks still happen.
Departing from Zagreb
FlixBus departs from the main bus station, Autobusni Kolodvor Zagreb. It’s about 2 km from the city centre, so you can walk it in 20-25 minutes or hop on a tram. Once you’re there, you’ll find signs for FlixBus departures and an electronic board showing platform numbers. There are also helpful staff at the Flixbus Lounge who you can ask if you are unsure about anything. It’s maybe not the most exciting station, but there are a few places around to grab a snack or a coffee before you go.
Make sure to arrive 15 minutes early – drivers can be prompt, and boarding is usually straightforward once the bus pulls in.
The Journey to Ljubljana from Zagreb
The drive can take anything from 2 to 2.5 hours, though it can be slightly longer if the border’s busy. It’s a direct route with no changes, and while it’s not the most thrilling ride of your life, the scenery is perfectly beautiful – you’ll roll past green hills, small towns, and wide open countryside.
The buses are modern and fairly comfortable. You’ll usually get WiFi, power outlets, and a bit of legroom. Don’t rely on the WiFi for anything major – it’s decent for messages but not much more. Most people just plug in to a podcast, scroll a bit, and zone out.
There’s a quick stop at the border where Croatian and Slovenian officials might board to check passports. It’s usually efficient, but it can take 10–15 minutes depending on how many people are on board.
Side note: Do not be one of those people who play Reels and Shorts out loud or has a video call on the journey. It isn’t cool. Bring headphones or suck it up and be miserable – but do not inflict that misery on to others!
Arriving in Ljubljana
You’ll arrive at Avtobusna Postaja Ljubljana, the main bus station. It’s right next to the train station and just a 10-minute walk to the city centre or old town. Super handy if you’re staying anywhere central.
There are taxis, buses, and even e-scooters nearby, but honestly, Ljubljana is compact and easy to explore on foot.
