I developed the Trilemma after years of fitting regular travel around a full-time job, a fixed annual leave allowance and a bank account that, very rudely, refuses to fund every trip I dream up.
Every time you plan a trip, three things start competing for attention:
- Where you want to go.
- How much annual leave you want to use.
- How much you are willing to spend.
You can usually make two of them behave. But getting all three to cooperate is where things get interesting.

Find Your 9-5 Travel Style
Move the three sliders to show how important each priority is to you.
Are you willing to follow the cheapest flight wherever it takes you? Will you pay more to reach the destination you actually want? Or are your precious annual leave days completely non-negotiable?
The calculator will reveal the travel style hiding behind your booking decisions.
The 9-5 Travel Trilemma™
You can usually have two of these…
But rarely all three.
Move the sliders and watch your priorities shift.

What Is the 9-5 Travel Trilemma?
The 9-5 Travel Trilemma is the idea that most people working full-time can optimise two of three travel priorities at once:
Dream Destination
You know exactly where you want to go. The location is not up for debate, even if getting there requires more money or annual leave.
Saving Money
Keeping the trip affordable comes first. You are willing to change your dates, destination or travel style to make the numbers work.
Protecting Annual Leave
You want to travel without rinsing your limited time off. That might mean flying after work, building trips around weekends or choosing somewhere that works within a very specific window.
Want the dream destination on fixed dates? You may need to pay more.
Want a low-cost trip without using much leave? You may need to stay flexible about where you go.
Want the dream destination at a bargain price? Your calendar may have to move.
This tension is the base of the Travel Trilemma.
Can You Beat the Travel Trilemma?
Occasionally, everything lines up.
The destination is exactly where you want to go. The dates fit perfectly around work. The price is somehow brilliant.
That is what I call a Unicorn Trip.
They exist, but relying on one to appear every time you want to travel is a dangerous game. Frequent travel becomes much easier when you understand which priority matters most and where you are genuinely willing to compromise.
One of my best examples of overcoming the 9-5 Travel Trilemma was my recent trip to China with Finnair from Dublin to Shanghai, via Helsinki. We travelled during April, overlapping with Qingming Festival, a really busy domestic travel period in China. Normally this would mean higher costs and limited availability.
However, because we’d planned months in advance, booked annual leave early and secured our internal transport as soon as booking windows opened, we managed to keep the entire trip surprisingly affordable. It also helped that we are light packers, so the Finnair Economy Light fare was an ideal choice.
Your 9-5 Travel Trilemma result is not a permanent travel identity either. You might protect your budget for a quick European weekend, then happily sacrifice it for a once-in-a-lifetime long-haul trip.
The real value of the Trilemma is knowing which decision you are making before twelve flight tabs, three calendars and one minor existential crisis get involved.
