1. Wander the Awakening the Walled City Trail
This is the one that’ll give you goosebumps (and not just because of the breeze). As night falls, Derry’s 400-year-old walls come alive with fire, sound, light and mystical creatures. It’s like stepping inside a dark fairytale – minus the predictable ending.
Top tip: Go early (around 6pm-ish) for the sweet spot before the big crowds roll in.
2. Get Your Costume On for the Carnival Parade
On 31 October, the city goes loco. Thousands of ghouls, banshees, witches and brilliantly unhinged mortals take to the streets for the legendary parade. You can expect the roll of drums, fire-breathers, and Pure Derry Halloween madness – finishing with fireworks over the River Foyle.
3. Catch the Fireworks Finale at the Waterfront
When the parade wraps up, the sky explodes. The fireworks kick off around 8.15pm, lighting up the whole city. Grab a spot by the river or on the city walls and watch Derry glow.
Top tip: Bring something warm. This isn’t Valencia.
4. Take a Spooky Walking Tour of the Derry Walls
If you fancy something a bit moodier, join one of the haunted walking tours around the city’s historic walls. You’ll hear tales of ghosts, battles, and mysterious goings-on that’ll make you side-eye every shadow.
Book ahead – they sell out quicker than pumpkin spice lattes in September.
5. Hit the Family-Friendly Derry Halloween Hubs
There are loads of pop-up Halloween events for kids (and big kids) – there are plenty of crafts, mini parades, costume contests and trick-or-treat trails around the shopping centres. Perfect if you’re bringing the little monsters along for the ride.
6. Eat, Drink & Be Scary
Between the parades and light shows, take a breather in one of Derry’s buzzing pubs or food outlets. Expect local craft beer, hearty grub, and a city full of people ready to chat, laugh and toast to the spooky season.

7. Keep the Party Going All Night
When the fireworks fade, the afterparties kick off. The bars, clubs and live music spots go until the early hours – because apparently the undead don’t need sleep.
Where to go: Stick within the city walls for maximum energy and minimum taxi drama.
8. Snap Killer Photos
Derry at Halloween is ridiculously photogenic – glowing walls, eerie fog, costumed crowds, reflections on the Foyle. Charge your phone, bring a power bank and find your golden hour spot for that perfect shot. I recommend you perch yourself on the walls facing the Guildhall for that shot. 9. Embrace the Celtic Spirit of Samhain
