The Ireland plan deliberately leaves three annual leave days unused. I would rather keep those available for another trip, a wedding or a flight deal that appears out of nowhere than force every last day into a neat calculation.
You do not need to follow one complete plan either. Pick the dates that suit the trips you actually want to take.
Best Days to Take Off in 2027
The best days to take off in 2027 depend on where you work. In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, booking Monday, 22 to Thursday, 25 March creates ten days off around Easter, while booking Wednesday, 29 to Friday, 31 December creates ten days off over Christmas and New Year.
In Scotland, those same three December leave days can create an eleven-day break. In Ireland, booking the four working days after several Monday public holidays can create nine days away from work using four days of annual leave.
What are the best days to take off in 2027?
Easter and Christmas offer some of the strongest annual leave opportunities in the UK. Book Monday, 22 to Thursday, 25 March in England, Wales or Northern Ireland for ten days off, or Wednesday, 29 to Friday, 31 December for ten days off. What Is Leave Stacking?
Leave stacking is the name given to booking annual leave beside weekends and public holidays. People have been doing it for years, the internet just gave it a brand name!
Take the four working days after a Monday public holiday. You stop work on Friday evening, have the weekend, the public holiday, four days of annual leave and another weekend.
You spend four annual leave days but you get nine days off before you are back at work.
That is the whole idea. You have already earned the time off. Leave stacking is simply about placing it where it gives you the longest useful break.

Check Your Own Annual Leave Policy First
Before you send six leave requests to your manager in one sitting, check how your workplace handles bank and public holidays.
In the UK, a full-time worker will usually receive at least 5.6 weeks of paid annual leave. That works out at 28 days for somebody working five days a week, but employers are allowed to include bank holidays within those 28 days.
Having a bank holiday on the national calendar does not automatically mean that your workplace will close or that you will receive an additional day off.
In Ireland, most employees are entitled to four working weeks of paid annual leave. Public holidays sit alongside that entitlement, although the benefit does not always arrive as the exact day off shown on the calendar.
This becomes particularly important when a public holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday. In Ireland, it does not automatically jump to the following Monday. Your employer may give you another paid day off, an additional day of annual leave or additional pay instead.
Check your contract before booking anything non-refundable. The calendar may say yes while your staff handbook says absolutely not. The key to maximising annual leave successfully is knowing exactly what you are entitled to and adapting the calendar accordingly.

How I Would Use 20 Annual Leave Days in Ireland
I would not book every public holiday window. That could leave you with loads of short trips but no annual leave remaining for something bigger.
A more balanced plan would be:
- Use one day at New Year for a four-day break
- Use four days around St Brigid’s Day for nine days off
- Use four days at Easter for nine days off
- Use four days around the June public holiday for nine days off
- Use four days around the October public holiday for nine days off
That creates 40 days away from work using 17 annual leave days.
You would still have three days available for another long weekend or to attach to a longer trip elsewhere in the year.
You could swap any of those nine-day windows around. St Patrick’s Day may suit a spring trip, while the August public holiday could work better for a summer break.
The point is not to collect every public holiday. It is to choose the ones that fit the travel year you actually want. That’s the key to winning the maximise annual leave game.
Be Careful With Christmas in Ireland
Christmas Day falls on Saturday and St Stephen’s Day falls on Sunday in 2027.
You are still entitled to a public holiday benefit, but you should not assume that Monday, 27 December and Tuesday, 28 December will automatically become paid days off.
Your employer can provide the benefit in several ways, including another paid day off, an additional annual leave day or additional pay. Find out how your workplace will handle those dates before building a ten-day Christmas trip around them.

Turn 20 Annual Leave Days Into 51 Days Off in Northern Ireland
One way to spread your time off across the year would be:
- New Year: four days off using one leave day
- St Patrick’s Day: nine days off using four
- Easter: ten days off using four
- July: nine days off using four
- Summer: nine days off using four
- Christmas: ten days off using three
That gives you 51 days away from work across six separate breaks, using 20 annual leave days.
I like this plan because it does not use everything in spring. You get breaks in January, March, July, late summer and at Christmas.
You could swap St Patrick’s Day for one of the May windows if having two March breaks feels excessive. Your annual leave plan should fit your life, not just produce the biggest number on a calculator.

At Easter, you can also place your four annual leave days after Easter Monday.
Book Tuesday, 30 March to Friday, 2 April and you will be away from work from Good Friday, 26 March until Sunday, 4 April.
Both options create ten days off. Choose the side of Easter that works best for your trip and flight prices.
Turn 20 Annual Leave Days Into 51 Days Off
Using every opportunity in the table would give you:
- Four days at New Year
- Ten days at Easter
- Nine days in early May
- Nine days around the spring bank holiday
- Nine days at the end of August
- Ten days over Christmas and New Year
That is 51 days away from work across six breaks using 20 annual leave days.
It looks excellent on paper. Whether you need two nine-day breaks within a month in May and June is another question.
You could keep one of those four-day blocks for a destination that needs more time or use it to create several smaller trips later in the year.

The Christmas break continues until Tuesday, 4 January because Scotland also has substitute bank holidays for New Year’s Day and 2 January in 2028.
Three annual leave days for an eleven-day break is difficult to argue with.
Turn 20 Annual Leave Days Into 52 Days Off in Scotland
A balanced Scottish annual leave plan could include:
- New Year: ten days off using four leave days
- Good Friday: nine days off using four
- Early May: four days off using one
- Summer: nine days off using four
- St Andrew’s Day: nine days off using four
- Christmas: eleven days off using three
That gives you 52 days away from work across six breaks using 20 annual leave days.
Scotland gets the best overall result in 2027, although I would still consider whether you want to use four days around St Andrew’s Day so close to the Christmas break.
The maths may be satisfying, but your own travel plans should always win.
The Biggest Annual Leave Hack Is Not Always the Best Trip
Getting nine days away from work using four annual leave days looks like an obvious win.
It can also mean travelling over one of the busiest weekends of the year, paying more for flights and discovering that everybody else had exactly the same idea.
This is where the rest of the 9-5 Travel Trilemma comes back into play.
You may be protecting your annual leave, but what is happening to your budget? Does the public holiday window work for the destination you actually want to visit? Are you saving four leave days only to spend an extra £300 on flights?
Before booking every public holiday window, ask yourself:
- Which trips need a full week?
- Which destinations genuinely work as a long weekend?
- Could you fly after work and protect another leave day?
- Are your chosen dates inside school holidays?
- Would travelling one week later save enough money to justify using another day?
- Do you need to keep leave available for plans that have not appeared yet?
There is no prize for producing the most mathematically efficient calendar if none of the dates take you where you actually want to go.
How I Plan My Own Annual Leave
I have travelled to 45 countries and more than 300 cities while working full-time. I have used public holidays for European city breaks, flown straight after work to avoid using an extra day of leave and protected longer blocks for trips to places including China, Brazil and Mexico.
I normally start with the trip that needs the most time. But sometimes I book the time off first and the trip practically manifests itself. And, that is exactly what happened with my recent trip to China.
I already had a week booked off around Easter to stretch my time away from work. Then, one evening, I was mindlessly scrolling Skyscanner and spotted return flights from Dublin to China for just over £600, on the exact dates I had taken off.
At first, I genuinely thought it was a mistake. China had been somewhere I wanted to visit for as long as I had understood the concept of travel, and suddenly the destination, dates and price had all lined up at once. That is what I call a unicorn trip.

It also proved why booking leave early and keeping an eye on flights matters. I was not scrambling to request time off after finding the deal. The time was already protected, which meant I could book quickly when the right trip appeared.
Once the biggest block is secured, I look at the public holiday calendar and see what else can be built around the annual leave I have left. That might create another nine-day trip, but it could also mean using one day of leave for a four-day weekend.
I do not lock in every possible break simply because the calendar allows it. Travel plans change. Flight deals appear. Weddings get announced. Sometimes you just need a day off with nowhere to be.
Not all the time. Just sometimes. Leaving a little space in the calendar has value too.
