Three Things I’m Nervous About in Mexico City

Mexico City is one of the biggest, buzziest, and most chaotic capitals in the world. A city of nearly twenty-two million people, where history, culture, and a lot of street food collide. And in just a few days, I’ll be diving headfirst into it.

But before I get carried away with all the tacos and rooftop views, let’s take a beat. There are a few things that have me slightly on edge. I love a city that keeps me on my toes, but Mexico City is on another level. Here’s what’s been running through my head in the lead-up to this trip.

1. The Sheer Size of It

I’ve been to some pretty hectic cities. Cairo, Bangkok, Marrakech. But CDMX is massive. 1,485 square kilometres of neighbourhoods, markets, parks, and chaotic streets, massive. No matter how much research I do, there’s no way to fully prepare for navigating a city this size. Will we fall in love with a particular barrio and barely scratch the surface of the rest? Will we spend half the trip stuck in traffic? Who knows.

2. The Altitude Situation

Here’s a fun fact. Mexico City sits at 2,240 metres above sea level. That’s almost as high as Machu Picchu. And while I’d love to pretend I’m the kind of person who adapts instantly, I already know I’m going to feel it. Will I be power-walking through Chapultepec Park or wheezing my way to a coffee shop? TBD. I’ve heard staying hydrated helps, so let’s hope that applies to mezcal as well.

3. Navigating the Food Scene as a Vegetarian

Street food is a huge part of Mexico City’s culture, and I plan on getting involved. But let’s be honest. Mexico isn’t exactly the most veggie-friendly country in the world. I know there are amazing options out there, but will they be as easy to find as I’m hoping? Or will I be living off quesadillas and guacamole for a week? Either way, I’m up for the challenge.

Despite these little pre-trip nerves, I’m beyond excited to get stuck into this city. No doubt I’ll have some stories to tell. Whether it’s about mastering the metro, accidentally ordering something I definitely didn’t mean to, or discovering my new favourite taco spot. Stay tuned for the chaos.

Mexico City is big, bold, and packed with incredible experiences. I’m putting together the ultimate guide to help you make the most of it. Sign up below to be the first to get all the best tips and hidden gems.
