10 Travel Packing Hacks Every Weekend Traveller Needs

Travel Packing Hacks – How to pack light for 2–3 day trips

A small bag isn’t just easier to carry, it also saves you money. Not paying for extra baggage on flights means more cash for the fun stuff: tapas crawls, last-minute boat trips, that cocktail you didn’t plan on. And trust me, once you’ve done a weekend with just a backpack, dragging a massive case through cobbled streets just feels ridiculous. Welcome to your very own travel packing hacks guide!

Clothing hacks, tech gear, and toiletries for 2–3 day trips

Clothes first. The trick is editing. Pick a simple palette that works together so everything can be mixed without overthinking. One pair of jeans or trousers, one jumper or jacket, a few tees, and something comfortable for lounging. For warmer spots, swap jeans for shorts and pack something that works for day or night. Shoes eat space – wear the heavier pair for travel, pack one lighter option (if you must!).

Here’s a quick formula I use for packing for 2–3 day weekend trips:

  1. One “anchor” piece (jeans or trousers).
  2. Two tees that mix with everything.
  3. One extra layer (jumper/jacket).
  4. One pair of trainers or boots.
  5. Underwear and socks for each day.

Top tip: Roll your clothes. It saves space and stops creases. If you still manage to get creases, hang your garments in the hotel bathroom when you’re showering and they will fall right out.

Replying to @traveljournal._ Peaceful… if your idea of zen is hauling multiple 20kg suitcases over a bridge in 30 degree heat 😂 (I joke, I joke) We loved exploring Venice but it was BUSY by day. We noticed a huge decrease in the crowds at night though, which made everything a little more magical. Even by golden hour, the crowds had thinned out enough to allow me to grab some beautiful shots 🫶 I do however, have SO many questions for these people with the MULTIPLE giant suitcases 😂 but I appreciate them for finally giving me a reason to use the @jet2 audio 🤩 #venice #venezia #veniceitaly #tourism #jet2holidays

Tech is where people go wild. Keep it lean: phone, charger, headphones, maybe a tablet, maybe a camera (with one lens only). I always carry a power bank, keep my cables in a pouch, and travel with a compact adapter that works anywhere in the world. It even has USB sockets so I can charge everything at once without hauling multiple plugs.

Toiletries can be a trap. I’ve bought small travel bottles from The Body Shop and refill them from the big ones at home when they’re done. Solid versions are handy, but honestly, for a weekend you don’t need half your bathroom. Deodorant, toothbrush, toothpaste, sunscreen – you’re golden. Hotels often have the basics, and if not, there’s always a shop round the corner.

If you’re away longer and worried about running out of clothes, cities are full of laundries (My top travel packing hack). Search “lavandería” on Google Maps, drop off your stuff, and grab a coffee while your clothes get a freshen up. A €5 wash and dry is way cheaper than paying for a checked bag.

Must-have accessories for any weekend trip

The little things make all the difference:

  1. Reusable water bottle – keeps you hydrated without constant corner-shop visits.
  2. Ziploc bag or dry pouch – brilliant for separating dirty laundry or keeping toiletries from leaking over your clothes.
  3. Travel adapter – ideally one that covers the globe with USB ports built in.
  4. Power bank – essential if you’re out all day snapping photos or using maps.
  5. Small pouch for cables – so you’re not untangling wires at airport security.

That’s it. Nothing extraordinary, nothing bulky, just gear to keep your trip going smooth.

Common packing mistakes to avoid

Mistakes cost you more than space – they cost you freedom!

  1. Overpacking – Lugging a heavy bag around is not the vibe. You’ll end up avoiding certain streets, skipping spontaneous detours, and moaning about your shoulders instead of soaking up the city.
  2. Unbroken shoes – I learned this the hard way in Venice – massive blisters, sore feet, and no amount of plasters could fix it. Not the vibe. Always road test your shoes before packing.
  3. Packing stuff you wouldn’t wear at home – If you don’t reach for it in your own wardrobe, you won’t suddenly love it in Rome.
  4. Forgetting essentials – Chargers, passport, headphones. It happens. I keep a checklist on my phone and tick it off every time.
  5. No spare room – Always leave a little space in your bag. You’ll end up with snacks, souvenirs, or some clothes you just had to buy – and you’ll be glad you planned for it.
